Moe’s Southwest Grill taps design contestants to create taco to-go packaging

 In Blog

Off-premise business continues to grow in the restaurant industry, and so is the demand for packaging that can keep consumers’ orders safe throughout the delivery process. That need inspired Moe’s Southwest Grill executive chef, Ciaran Duffy, to get involved with “The Next Great Package,” a three-part video series produced by “The Paper & Packaging — How Life Unfolds” that documented engineers and designers as they competed to develop solutions using only paper and cardboard.

“We really enjoyed working alongside the How Life Unfolds team to develop two incredible concepts for to-go packaging that is visually appealing and functional,” Duffy said in an interview with FastCasual.  “We look forward to seeing how we can incorporate more of these types of packaging innovations into our restaurants.”

To address the issue of food waste and deliver high-quality family dining experiences, the contestants — Marti Zabell, packaging designer, and Christina Ghiloni, a senior cosmetics consultant, had the task of improving Moe’s takeout packaging using paper materials to deliver food fresh and minimize waste.

“We are always looking to celebrate unique, innovative paper-based solutions to packaging challenges, so we couldn’t be more excited about this fresh approach,” said Mary Anne Hansan, president of the Paper and Packaging Board. “We hope that The Next Great Package series will encourage others to use paper packaging to inspire creativity and innovation in their everyday lives.”

The video series, which also featured Zappos and Yotel, was hosted by design and technology commentator, Adesina Sanchez. Each submission was judged by company representatives considering the assignment, brand solution, design elements and wow factor. Designs had to be inspiring, innovative and secure using paper’s unique properties to solve the business challenge, Hansan said.
